Do Not Be Conformed

← All sermons

Summary

Paul’s appeal in Romans 12 is a call to whole-life worship: because of God’s mercy, believers are to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable, and to stop letting the world’s patterns and principles shape their behavior, beliefs, and attitudes. The message traces how conformity works, quietly bending a life to fit the customs and pressures around it, and sets against it the call to seek the things above, where Christ is seated, rather than the passing desires of the flesh and the eye.

That transformation is not self-produced. It begins with God’s promise to give a new heart and a new spirit, and it shows itself in the fruit the Spirit produces: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Renewed minds discern God’s good and acceptable will, and are marked by self-control and by doing all things, eating, drinking, everything, to the glory of God.

Essential truths

  1. Believers owe God their whole selves as a living sacrifice because of his mercy.
  2. Conformity to the world's patterns is a real danger the mind must resist.
  3. Only the renewal of the mind by the Spirit reveals what is good and well-pleasing to God.
  4. A transformed mind is known by the fruit of the Spirit and a life lived for God's glory.

Encouragement and challenge

Test what shapes your thinking each day, the world's patterns or God's Word, and ask the Spirit to keep renewing your mind so your life increasingly reflects his will.
