The One True Religion

← All sermons

Summary

This two-part message compares the world’s religions and asks what makes Christianity different, then presses into the question Pilate once asked Jesus: “What is truth?” Part one surveys competing religious claims about God, sets them against the Bible’s diagnosis that all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, and shows that only in Christ’s incarnation, sinless life, substitutionary death, and resurrection is there a genuine answer to humanity’s real problem, sin, salvation by grace through faith and not by human effort.

Part two follows Jesus’ own claim to be “the way, the truth, and the life” and traces what Scripture says truth is: objective, absolute, and freeing, culminating in the truth of who Jesus is, the Word who became flesh, “full of grace and truth.” Together the two messages call listeners to test every religious claim against Christ, the one true way to God.

Essential truths

  1. Every religion claims answers about God, but only the gospel diagnoses humanity's fundamental problem as sin and offers a real solution in Christ.
  2. Salvation is by grace through faith, not the result of human works, so no one may boast.
  3. Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me."
  4. Truth is objective, absolute, and freeing; knowing it and abiding in Christ's word sets us free.

Encouragement and challenge

Don't settle for a vague sense that all religions are the same; test every claim against Jesus Christ, the one true way, and walk in the truth that sets you free.
