Homosexuality

Summary

The sermon confronts homosexuality as one expression of a broader pattern Paul describes in Romans 1: people who knew God did not honor Him, exchanged His truth for a lie, and so were given over to dishonorable passions. From there it works through the relevant texts — Leviticus 18 and 20, Romans 1, and 1 Timothy 1 — showing that Scripture names homosexual acts as sin, not a difference to be celebrated, and answers common arguments that claim the Bible has been mistranslated or misapplied.

Yet the message does not end in condemnation. Homosexuality is treated as a sin to be mortified, not a behavior to be merely modified, but also as a sin like any other from which people can be washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Anyone in Christ is a new creation, and that hope is held out as genuinely available to all who turn to Him.

Essential truths

  1. Homosexuality, like all sexual sin, flows from a deeper rejection of God as Creator (Romans 1:21-25).
  2. Scripture consistently names homosexual acts as sin (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:9-11), not merely an outdated cultural preference.
  3. Homosexuality is a sin to be mortified, not a behavior to be modified or an identity to be affirmed.
  4. "Such were some of you" — the gospel offers real hope that those in Christ are washed, sanctified, and justified new creations.

Encouragement and challenge

Don't let compassion slide into compromise, and don't let conviction curdle into contempt — call sin what Scripture calls it, while holding out the same washing, sanctifying, justifying grace offered to every sinner in Christ.
