After the flood, humanity gathered on a plain in Shinar determined to build a city and a tower reaching to the heavens, so that they might make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered. This ambition reveals what every “city of man” ultimately is: an attempt to secure identity and safety apart from God.
God is not a God of confusion but of order, and His response to Babel’s pride was to confuse the builders’ language and scatter them across the earth — a just judgment on human self-sufficiency. Where man’s city ends in disorder, God builds order through His Word and His Spirit, uniting a people not by shared ambition but by the one body and one Spirit He gives. The Lord Himself, not any tower we build, is the strong tower where the righteous find safety.
