Parable of the Treasure

← All sermons

Summary

The parable of the hidden treasure (Matt. 13:44) reveals a secret of the kingdom: a joy so great that a man sells all he has to gain it. But before Christ captivates a heart, sin often has, holding it captive to lesser treasures that only look like joy.

The sermon then turns to the cost God paid to free captivated sinners, seen supremely in the gospel, and asks how a captivated heart is set free – pointing to Christ as the greater treasure worth abandoning everything else to gain.

Essential truths

  1. The kingdom of heaven is worth more than anything we could give up to obtain it.
  2. Sin captivates the heart just as powerfully as any treasure, competing for what only Christ deserves.
  3. Freeing a captivated sinner cost God dearly, seen supremely in the gospel.
  4. True joy is found not in what we hold onto but in what we are willing to surrender for Christ.

Encouragement and challenge

Examine what currently captivates your heart, and count the cost of trading it for the surpassing treasure of Christ.
