Salt of the Earth

← All sermons

Summary

Taking Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:13, “you are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?”, the sermon traces God’s covenant relationship with his people from the reading of Deuteronomy 6, love the Lord your God with all your heart, and asks what it looks like for a covenant people to keep their saltiness rather than lose it.

Moving through several headings on the nature of death as separation from God and his righteousness, God’s ongoing provision for his people, and the danger of a fading, diluted faith, the message calls the church back to a distinctly Christian life that genuinely preserves and flavors the world around it, rather than blending in and becoming spiritually tasteless.

Essential truths

  1. Disciples of Jesus are called to be salt to the world around them, preserving and bringing out what is good.
  2. Salt that has lost its flavor is fit for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled.
  3. Death, in its deepest sense, is separation from God and from his righteousness.
  4. God remains faithful to provide for his covenant people even as he calls them to persevering faith.

Encouragement and challenge

Examine whether your life still tastes distinctly of Christ, or whether it has quietly blended into the world around you, and ask God to restore your saltiness.
