Protoevangelium: The First Gospel

← All sermons

Summary

The seminar opens with the protoevangelium – “the first gospel” – God’s word to the serpent in Genesis 3:15 promising enmity between the serpent’s seed and the woman’s seed, and a Deliverer who would be wounded in the heel yet crush the serpent’s head. From Cain’s murder of Abel, through Pharaoh’s slaughter of Israel’s infants, Athaliah’s massacre of the royal line, and Haman’s plot against the Jews, Scripture traces one long war on the promised seed, until Christ – the true Seed of the woman – is born, crucified, and raised, stripping “him who had the power of death, that is, the devil” of his power (Heb. 2:14).

The seminar then follows this same war of the seeds into Revelation 12, where the defeated dragon turns his rage against the woman’s remaining offspring – “those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus Christ” – and closes with Satan’s certain end in the lake of fire. It concludes with the Day of Atonement (Lev. 16), whose blood-sprinkled mercy seat, scapegoat, and high priest’s mediation typify the atonement Christ accomplished once for all, so that those who trust Him are “justified by faith” and have “peace with God” (Rom. 5:1), their sins forgiven and not counted against them (Rom. 4:7-8).

Essential truths

  1. Genesis 3:15, "the first gospel," promises a coming Deliverer – the seed of the woman – who would be wounded yet crush the serpent's head.
  2. Throughout redemptive history, Satan has repeatedly sought to destroy the promised seed, yet God has preserved His covenant line every time.
  3. Through His death and resurrection, Christ has stripped the devil of the power of death and secured final victory over him (Heb. 2:14; Rev. 12).
  4. The Day of Atonement's blood-sprinkled mercy seat pictured beforehand the atonement Christ accomplished once for all, giving believers true peace with God (Lev. 16; Rom. 5:1).

Encouragement and challenge

Take courage that the ancient war against God's people is already a defeated one in Christ, and rest in the peace His finished atonement secures rather than any effort of your own.
