What Is the Gospel?

← All sermons

Summary

This three-part seminar lays out the gospel in the classic pattern of creation, fall, and redemption. Part 1 moves through “The Creation,” “The Commandment,” and “The Fall of Man” from Genesis, then asks directly, “What is sin?” – defining it as a corruption and subversion of humanity’s relationship with God, lawlessness because it is a transgression of God’s law, and unrighteousness because it opposes His righteousness, leaving a life outside Him that ends in death.

The later sessions carry this forward into God’s law and its claim on the conscience, moving toward the answer the gospel gives to sin and lawbreaking. The slides recovered are sparse, so the fuller shape of the closing gospel presentation could not be reconstructed in detail from what is legible.

Essential truths

  1. God created the world good and gave man a clear commandment in the garden.
  2. The fall corrupted humanity's relationship with God, turning obedience into transgression.
  3. Sin is lawlessness – a transgression of God's law – and unrighteousness, opposing God's righteousness, and it leads to death.
  4. God's law continues to expose and press this sin, preparing the way for the gospel's answer in Christ.

Encouragement and challenge

Do not treat sin as a small thing; see it for what the slides call it – a rejection of relationship with God that ends in death apart from the gospel's remedy.
