Way of Life

Summary

The seminar takes up a string of hard discussion questions built around the rich young ruler’s question to Jesus, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Matt. 19:16-26): Is good teaching itself the key to keeping the law? Are philosophy, asceticism, or poverty requirements for salvation? Why did the rich young ruler go away sorrowful rather than accept Jesus’ word? Each question tests a popular but faulty answer to how a person is actually saved.

Using diagrams contrasting two diverging paths, the lecture presses home that the way of life is not found in law-keeping, philosophy, or self-denial for their own sake, but in the one true Teacher Himself; every substitute way, however sincere or costly-looking, ultimately diverges from the path that leads to life, while only the way marked out by Christ arrives at it.

Essential truths

  1. Eternal life is not earned by good teaching, philosophy, poverty, or law-keeping treated as ends in themselves.
  2. The rich young ruler's sorrow at Jesus' answer exposes a heart unwilling to surrender what competes with God for first place.
  3. Many roads present themselves as "the way of life," but they diverge from the true way marked out in Christ.
  4. Only the way Christ Himself teaches actually arrives at eternal life.

Encouragement and challenge

Examine what you are quietly trusting to inherit eternal life – your own goodness, effort, or philosophy – and turn instead to Christ, the true way of life.
