James writes to Christians scattered by hardship and opens not with sympathy but with a command: count it all joy. He is not asking anyone to enjoy suffering. He is saying that a trial is doing something — producing steadfastness — and that a Christian can know this even while it hurts. The hinge is wisdom: if you cannot see what God is doing, ask Him, and He gives without reproach.
