Fruitful Life

← All sermons

Summary

The lesson opens with Jesus’ words that the Father is glorified when His disciples bear much fruit, and that He chose and appointed them to go and bear fruit that remains. Fruitfulness is not an optional extra for a few believers; it is the purpose for which Christ called His people.

The secret of fruitfulness is abiding. As a branch cannot bear fruit by itself, so apart from Christ we can do nothing. The study then turns to Galatians 5, setting the fruit of the Spirit beside the deeds of the flesh, and reminding believers that Christ set them free not to indulge the flesh but to serve one another in love. It closes with Ephesians 4: laying aside the old self and putting on the new, created in the likeness of God in righteousness and holiness.

Essential truths

  1. The Father is glorified when His people bear much fruit.
  2. Apart from abiding in Christ we can do nothing.
  3. The fruit of the Spirit stands against the deeds of the flesh, and those who live by the Spirit are to walk by the Spirit.
  4. Christian freedom is freedom to serve in love and to take on God's character, not an opportunity for the flesh.

Encouragement and challenge

Stay close to Christ through His Word and prayer rather than trying to produce fruit by effort alone. Ask which deeds of the flesh you need to put off, and which fruit of the Spirit you need to put on this week.
