Psalm 33 says the Lord looks down from heaven and sees all the sons of men, yet His eye rests in a special way on those who fear Him and hope in His lovingkindness. The lesson gathers the witness of Scripture: God’s eyes are on the righteous and His ears open to their cry, He keeps His people as the apple of His eye, He directs their steps, and nothing is hidden from Him. The priestly blessing of Numbers 6 puts this care into words: the Lord bless you and keep you.
The life of King Asa shows both sides of this truth. Asa did right, trusted the Lord in battle and was warned that the Lord is with you while you are with Him. Later he relied on the king of Aram instead of God, and the prophet Hanani rebuked him, for the eyes of the Lord move to and fro to strongly support those whose heart is completely His. The victory belongs to the Lord.
