Rejoicing in God’s Creation

← All sermons

Summary

Psalm 33 says that by the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host. The lesson takes this call to praise out under the night sky. Slides on radio telescopes, the Hubble and the James Webb telescopes point to a universe of countless galaxies, and Scripture answers that the heavens are telling of the glory of God, and that He calls every star by name so that not one is missing.

The lesson then comes back to the earth itself, which God hangs on nothing and has fitted for life. Its place in the habitable zone, its protective atmosphere and the other conditions that make a planet able to support life are presented as the work of the One who established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding. Creation is a reason to rejoice in the Lord.

Essential truths

  1. God created the heavens and all their host by His word.
  2. The vastness of the universe declares the greatness and power of its Maker.
  3. God has fitted the earth, by His wisdom, to be a home for life.
  4. Creation calls God's people to praise and rejoice in Him.

Encouragement and challenge

Take time this week to look at what God has made and let it lead you to worship. Praise the One who made the stars and knows each by name.
