Human Dignity

Summary

The study sets out how secular humanism sees man: a grown-up germ, a cosmic accident emerged from slime, with no intrinsic dignity or eternal purpose. The slides cite The Naked Ape and the murder of six million Jews in Nazi Germany to show where that view leads. A humanistic idea of dignity based on status or class creates unequal treatment and oppression.

Against this, Psalm 8 asks, “What is man that You take thought of him?” and answers that God has crowned him with glory and made him to rule over the works of His hands. Man is created in God’s image, to mirror Him and show what He is like, and he is called to dominion. His dignity comes from God and is shown as he reflects God’s character and serves faithfully in his calling. Because our bodies are the Spirit’s temple, we are to glorify God in them and offer them as living sacrifices.

Essential truths

  1. Man is not a cosmic accident; he was created by God in His image.
  2. Human dignity rests on God's image and calling, not on status, class or ability.
  3. Man is called to exercise dominion over creation as God's steward.
  4. We honor our dignity by glorifying God in our bodies and in our daily work.

Encouragement and challenge

Treat every person as an image-bearer of God, and offer your own body and work to Him as a living sacrifice rather than bringing disgrace on the image you carry.
