The lesson returns to the second half of the greatest commandment: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” on which, with love for God, the whole Law and the Prophets depend. The Bible, not our feelings, defines love: we love God’s children when we love God and keep His commandments, and the whole law is fulfilled in loving our neighbor. God’s commands are the standard for love, even toward enemies, because the human heart is deceitful.
The slides warn against self-deception: religion that does not bridle the tongue or care for orphans and widows is worthless, and charity done to be seen is not sincere. Faith without works is dead, so we are to love in deed and in truth. Sin centers everything on self, but God’s commandments turn us from self-love toward others. Love does no harm to a neighbor, and it seeks reconciliation before worship.
