The Parable of the Vineyard Workers

← All sermons

Summary

A landowner hires laborers at different hours and pays everyone the same denarius, starting with the last. Those hired first grumble, and he answers that he has done them no wrong: is their eye envious because he is generous? The lesson calls that grumbling a serious accusation against God’s graciousness. The fault lies not with God but with man’s false idea of justice.

The slides set out God’s testimony about man’s true condition: dead in sin, by nature children of wrath, suppressing the truth, without hope and without God. They then take up the question “How can a loving God send people to hell?” The problem is not God’s badness but that He is good, just and holy, while sinners store up wrath by unrepentant hearts. Yet God has provided an escape in His Son. The last shall be first, and salvation is given freely and equally to all who come to faith in Jesus.

Essential truths

  1. God is never unjust when He shows grace; no one can claim that He owes them.
  2. By nature all people are dead in sin and deserve God's judgment.
  3. Hell reflects God's holiness and justice, and God has provided escape through His Son.
  4. Salvation is the same free gift for all who come to faith in Jesus, early or late in life.

Encouragement and challenge

Do not grumble at God's generosity to others or keep score of your own service; thank Him that He gives grace to whom He wishes, including you.
