The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

← All sermons

Summary

In two short parables, a treasure hidden in a field and a pearl of great value, Jesus shows people giving up everything they have for something worth far more. The lesson defines the kingdom of God as the rule and reign of Christ, righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. It is worth more than every treasure of this world combined, yet it is hidden, and no one sees its true worth unless the Spirit reveals it. Seeing it is a gift: unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom.

The treasure is finally Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and in Him believers receive an inheritance that cannot fade. The kingdom has a cost, since disciples must deny themselves and count all things loss to gain Christ. The man sells everything with joy, because we gladly pursue what we value most.

Essential truths

  1. The kingdom of God, the reign of Christ, is worth more than all the treasures of this world.
  2. No one sees the kingdom's worth unless God opens their eyes; one must be born again to see it.
  3. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge and an inheritance that will not fade.
  4. Following Christ costs everything, yet those who see His worth give it up with joy.

Encouragement and challenge

Ask what you are holding onto more tightly than Christ. Set your mind on things above, and count everything else as loss compared with knowing Him.
