Wise and Foolish Builders

← All sermons

Summary

Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with two builders. One hears His words and acts on them, like a man who built his house on the rock. The other hears and does not act, like a man who built on sand. The same rain, floods and winds strike both houses. One stands, and the other falls, and great is its fall.

The lesson spoke about the importance of strong foundations. No one can lay any foundation other than Jesus Christ, and the fire of the last day will test the quality of each person’s work. Calling Jesus “Lord” is not enough; the question is whether we do the Father’s will, deny ourselves and follow Him. God has laid a precious cornerstone in Zion and made righteousness and justice His measuring line. His firm foundation stands with this seal: the Lord knows those who are His.

Essential truths

  1. Hearing Christ's words without doing them is building on sand.
  2. Jesus Christ is the only foundation, and every person's work will be tested on the last day.
  3. Calling Jesus "Lord" must be joined with doing the will of the Father.
  4. God's foundation stands firm: the Lord knows those who are His, and they depart from iniquity.

Encouragement and challenge

Ask what your life is resting on before the storm comes. Put Christ's words into practice this week, and turn from what does not honor Him.
