Summary

Again and again Jesus ends His teaching with the words “He who has ears, let him hear”: in the parables, in His teaching on what defiles a person, and in His letters to the seven churches of Asia. This lesson asked why some hear and others do not. Christ’s sheep hear His voice and follow Him, because the Father has given them to the Son. To the elect it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom. Others keep on hearing but never understand.

The lesson showed that dullness of hearing is a matter of the heart. Those who are not of God do not hear God’s words, and Christ Himself becomes a stone of stumbling to the disobedient. Scripture is God-breathed and profitable. So the call is the one given on the Mount of Transfiguration: “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him!” Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart.

Essential truths

  1. Christ repeatedly calls His hearers to listen, and that call still comes through His Word.
  2. Truly hearing Christ is a gift of God's grace; His sheep hear His voice and follow Him.
  3. Unbelief is a hardening of the heart, and Christ becomes a stumbling stone to the disobedient.
  4. The Father commands us to listen to His beloved Son.

Encouragement and challenge

Do not let familiarity with Scripture dull your hearing. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart; listen to Christ and obey.
