Contending for the Faith

← All sermons

Summary

Jude wanted to write about the salvation all believers share. Instead he urged them to contend earnestly for the faith once for all handed down to the saints, because ungodly people had crept in unnoticed. They turned the grace of God into licentiousness and denied Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord. The lesson linked this with the call to hold to sound doctrine and to reject any different gospel.

Contending for the faith is more than defending doctrine; it also means living it out. The lesson called believers to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and of their calling. The grace of God teaches us to deny ungodliness. Christ bore our sins so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. As partakers of the divine nature, we add virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness and love to our faith. The lesson closed on the chief end of man: to do all things to the glory of God.

Essential truths

  1. The faith has been delivered once for all to the saints and must be earnestly defended.
  2. False teachers turn grace into a license for sin and deny Christ's lordship.
  3. Saving grace trains believers to deny ungodliness and live righteously.
  4. The chief end of man is to glorify God in all things.

Encouragement and challenge

Know the faith well enough to guard it. Show that you hold it by growing in godliness, and do everything you do this week to the glory of God.
