A covenant is God binding Himself by promise. The seminar walked from the garden to the cross: the promise to Adam and Eve of a seed who would crush the serpent, the covenant with Abraham sworn by God alone, the covenant at Sinai that exposed the people’s inability to keep it, and the promise through Jeremiah of a new covenant written on the heart. Hebrews 8 shows that Jesus is the mediator of that better covenant, founded on better promises.
The three sessions belong together. The first laid the foundation — what a covenant is and why God chooses to relate to His people this way. The second followed the covenants through Israel’s history and showed each one pointing forward. The third settled on Christ: the covenant is not a contract we keep but a promise He has kept, sealed in His blood and given to us at the Table.
