Eternal Life

Summary

This two-session Ministers’ In-the-Word Seminar surveys what Scripture teaches about eternal life. The morning session works through Ephesians 2, dead in sin, made alive with Christ by grace through faith, and built together as God’s household and temple, showing that eternal life is a gift of grace, not of works, flowing from being reconciled to God and given access to the Father through Christ.

The afternoon session presses further into the nature of eternal life itself: it is a present possession as much as a future hope, defined by knowing the true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent, secured by Christ’s promise that his sheep will never perish, and reaching its full, resurrection hope in the new heavens and earth where God’s people will reign with him forever.

Essential truths

  1. Eternal life is a gift of God's grace, received through faith and not by human works.
  2. Believers who were dead in sin have been made alive together with Christ and given access to the Father.
  3. Eternal life means knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent.
  4. Christ promises that he gives his sheep eternal life, and no one can snatch them out of his hand.

Encouragement and challenge

Hold eternal life as both a present possession and a future hope, and let that certainty shape a life of good works prepared beforehand by God.
