Faithfulness

Summary

In ordinary life faithfulness is rightly prized. Husbands and wives expect fidelity, friends expect loyalty and employers expect reliability, and when these are betrayed the hurt is deep. The lesson shows that this universal demand does not begin with us. Faithfulness begins in the being of God, who keeps His covenant and lovingkindness to a thousand generations, and it becomes both a created reality and a moral obligation in the world He made.

The study then names the human inconsistency: people who are offended by unfaithfulness in others while living unfaithfully toward God. At its root is unbelief, self-centeredness and the wish to enjoy a faithful moral order without honoring the Giver. The way back is repentance that sees unfaithfulness to God as the deeper betrayal. When faithfulness to God is restored, faithfulness to others becomes an act of obedience and worship.

Essential truths

  1. Faithfulness originates in the being of God; He is the ultimately faithful One.
  2. Human faithfulness is derived from and meant to reflect divine faithfulness, and God demands it of all His people.
  3. Unfaithfulness to God inevitably corrodes faithfulness to neighbor.
  4. When faithfulness to God is restored, faithfulness in marriage, friendship and work becomes an act of worship.

Encouragement and challenge

Before measuring the faithfulness of others, ask where you have been unfaithful to God. Repent, and let His faithfulness to you shape how you keep your word at home, at work and in the church.
