Five Solas of the Reformation

← All sermons

Summary

The five solas summarize what the Reformers recovered from Scripture: Scripture alone as the highest authority, over against Rome’s three-fold authority of Scripture, tradition, and the magisterium; and grace alone, since salvation is God’s undeserved gift and not something earned by merit. Justification is by faith alone—God’s act of free grace whereby He pardons sin and counts sinners righteous for Christ’s sake, received by faith and not by works.

These truths flow into Christ alone, since there is salvation in no other name under heaven, and finally into God’s glory alone, since salvation from beginning to end is meant to bring praise to Him who alone is worthy of all majesty, dominion, and glory forever.

Essential truths

  1. Scripture alone, not church tradition or human authority, is our highest authority in matters of faith.
  2. Salvation is by grace alone, an undeserved gift freely given by God, not earned by merit.
  3. Justification is received by faith alone, not by faith plus our own works or righteousness.
  4. Salvation is in Christ alone, for there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.

Encouragement and challenge

Test what you believe about salvation against these five truths, and give God alone the glory for saving you.
