Forgive Us Our Sins

← All sermons

Summary

Jesus once told a Pharisee that a sinful woman who anointed His feet loved much because she had been forgiven much, while the one forgiven little loves little; the size of our love for Christ mirrors how deeply we grasp how much we’ve been forgiven. This two-part message pushes further into an often-excused sin: unforgiveness, which quietly poisons the heart and corrodes every relationship it touches.

Jesus reinforces this with the parable of a servant forgiven an enormous debt who then refuses to forgive a much smaller one owed to him, and warns that the Father will deal the same way with those who withhold forgiveness from the heart. Our forgiveness cost God dearly, pictured in the suffering servant who was pierced for our transgressions, so having been forgiven so much, we are called to forgive others just as freely, from the heart.

Essential truths

  1. Unforgiveness is not a small matter but a sin that poisons the heart and corrupts every other relationship.
  2. Those who have been forgiven a great debt by God ought to forgive others from the heart, however small the offense seems by comparison.
  3. Jesus links the depth of a person's love for Him to the depth of forgiveness they have received; those forgiven much love much.
  4. Christ's suffering, pictured in the suffering servant, is the costly ground on which our forgiveness rests.

Encouragement and challenge

Examine how sinful your own sin truly is and how much you have been forgiven, then let that reality free you to forgive others from the heart rather than nursing bitterness.
