Jesus told His disciples, “You are My friends if you do what I command you… I no longer call you servants… but I have called you friends.” Working from that text, the sermon lays out what a true friend looks like — someone who helps with no strings attached, respects your decisions while still guiding you, and lets you be as clumsy, messy, and imperfect as you are — and contrasts it with common perversions of friendship: girlfriends, boyfriends, friends with benefits, and live-in partners, relationships that trade covenant for convenience.
True friendship, the message argues, comes only from Christ, and that friendship reshapes how believers are to treat everyone else, even those who oppose them. The call is to love others as a friend, not because they’ve earned it, but because Christ loved us first.
