From Heaven to Earth: The Trinity in the Story of Christmas

← All sermons

Summary

Sin and death came into the world through one man, Adam, but grace and life come through the one Man, Jesus Christ (Romans 5:12). The Christmas story shows the Trinity accomplishing that rescue together: Joseph, son of David, is told not to fear taking Mary as his wife because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit, and the power of the Most High overshadows her so that the child born will be called the Son of God (Luke 1:35; Matthew 1:20).

Behind that moment stands the Father’s eternal plan, chosen before the foundation of the world according to the kind intention of His will, that His people would be holy and blameless through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:3-14). Those who hear the word of truth and believe are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, so that the whole work of Father, Son, and Spirit meets in the manger and continues in the life of every believer, summed up in the name Immanuel, God with us.

Essential truths

  1. Death entered the world through Adam, but life and grace come only through Christ.
  2. The virgin birth was the direct work of the Holy Spirit overshadowing Mary.
  3. Salvation was planned by the Father before the foundation of the world and is worked out through the Son and sealed by the Spirit.
  4. Christmas is ultimately about Immanuel: God Himself coming to be with His people.

Encouragement and challenge

See the whole Trinity at work in the Christmas story, and let it deepen your worship of the Father who planned, the Son who came, and the Spirit who applies salvation to you.
