Glorification

Summary

Glorification is the last link in what the Reformed tradition calls the golden chain of redemption: election, calling, justification, sanctification, and finally glorification, God’s guarantee that everyone He has predestined will be brought all the way home. Paul calls this “God’s wisdom in a mystery,” hidden before the ages for our glory.

The glory of fallen humanity is fading, like the glory that faded from Moses’ face, but the believer’s hope of glory rests on Christ, not on human achievement. Already we are children of God; when He appears, we will be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And when Christ returns, He will transform our lowly bodies to be like His own glorious body, by the very power that subjects all things to Himself.

Essential truths

  1. Glorification is the final link in the golden chain of redemption, the sure hope of everyone God has predestined, called, and justified.
  2. The glory of man in this fallen age is fading, but the believer's hope of glory rests not on human achievement but on Christ.
  3. In Christ, believers are being conformed to His image — already His children, and one day will be fully like Him when He appears.
  4. Christ will transform the believer's lowly body to be like His own glorious body, by the power that subjects all things to Himself.

Encouragement and challenge

Don't set your hope on the fading glory of this life — fix your hope on the certain glory to come in Christ, and let that hope shape how you live now.
