God with Us

Summary

Amid a season crowded with lights, music, feasting, and gift-giving, this message calls the church back to what Christmas is actually for: not any other figure, but the birth of Christ, God incarnate, one person who is fully God and fully man. John states it plainly – the Word became flesh and dwelt among us – and the sign of that coming was given long before, a sign as deep as Sheol and as high as heaven.

Paul explains the purpose behind that grace: though Christ was rich, for our sake he became poor, so that through his poverty we might become rich, and through his death we who were once God’s enemies are reconciled to him, much more, saved by his life. As one year ends and another begins, that is the good news the church carries forward: God is with us.

Essential truths

  1. Christmas remembers not the world's holiday trappings but the birth of Christ, God incarnate, one person with two natures, fully God and fully man.
  2. John describes it simply: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us – Immanuel, God with us.
  3. God himself gave assurance of this coming through a sign, one deep as Sheol and high as heaven, long before Christ was born.
  4. Because of Christ's death we who were once God's enemies are reconciled to him, and much more, saved by his life.

Encouragement and challenge

Let the wonder of 'God with us' carry into the new year – not as a sentimental Christmas thought, but as the reconciling reality that changes how you face whatever the new year holds.
