Higher Purpose in Life

Summary

Life’s higher purpose begins with a simple confession: from God, and through God, and to God are all things – to him be glory forever. God is sovereign and absolute, having created, ordained, and governing all things for his own eternal purposes, so that he operates in and through all things to bring them to their appointed end.

The sermon traces that sovereignty through Scripture’s own stories – Jacob’s struggles, Tamar’s desperation, Ruth’s faith, Job’s realization, and above all Joseph, who could tell the brothers who sold him into slavery, ‘you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring about that many people should be kept alive.’ Because God has purposed it, no one can turn it back, and those who know their God are strengthened to live out that purpose even amid their own shortcomings.

Essential truths

  1. All things are from God, through God, and to God; he is the source, means, and goal of everything that exists, so our lives find their meaning only in relation to him.
  2. God is absolutely sovereign: he created, ordained, and governs all things according to his own eternal purposes, and nothing happens outside his sovereign rule.
  3. The stories of Jacob, Tamar, Ruth, Job, and Joseph display the same pattern: God works through struggle, desperation, and even others' evil intentions to bring about his good and appointed ends, as Joseph told his brothers, 'you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.'
  4. Because God's purposes stand and cannot be turned back, those who know their God are strengthened to carry out great things even amid their own shortcomings.

Encouragement and challenge

Whatever struggle, desperation, or apparent setback you are facing, hold onto the truth Joseph held onto – that God is working even the intentions of others for a good and appointed end – and let that confidence anchor your sense of purpose rather than your own circumstances.
