Imago Dei: Created in the Image of God

← All sermons

Summary

The lesson begins where the Bible begins, with God’s decision to make man in His own image and likeness and to give him dominion over the earth. The slides describe man as God’s image on earth, a mirror and representative designed and commissioned to reflect God’s character: His justice, righteousness, mercy and creativity, bringing the world into order under His will. God looked on all He had made and called it very good.

But the image was marred. Adam fathered a son in his own likeness, and from then on man bears a broken image. The study turns to Christ, the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His person, and to the promise that those in Him will bear the image of the heavenly man. Believers are called to put on the new self, created in righteousness and holiness, while creation itself waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

Essential truths

  1. Man was created in the image of God to reflect His character and to rule the earth under Him.
  2. Since the fall, man bears a marred image passed down from Adam.
  3. Jesus Christ is the perfect image of God, and believers are being conformed to His image.
  4. The renewal of God's image in His people belongs with the coming restoration of all creation.

Encouragement and challenge

Ask where your life reflects God's character and where it still shows the old self. Put off what does not belong, and put on the new self, created in the likeness of God.
