Infinite and Uncontainable God

← All sermons

Summary

The lesson takes up the problem of defining God. To define something is to limit and comprehend it, but God is infinite and incomprehensible, so a God who could be defined would be no God at all. When Moses asked what name he should give the people, God answered, “I AM WHO I AM,” and called Himself the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The study explains that God’s name is not a label or description but a statement of His incomprehensibility. He is the source and definer of all things, who governs and is not governed by man. Yet He is not silent. God reveals His being and nature in history, in creation, in His written Word and supremely in His incarnate Word. His revealed name is the only name man can know, and it is His memorial to all generations.

Essential truths

  1. God is infinite and incomprehensible, so no human definition can contain Him.
  2. God's name, I AM WHO I AM, declares that He is self-existent and beyond human comprehension.
  3. God is the source and definer of all things; He governs and is not governed by man.
  4. God reveals Himself in history, creation, His written Word and supremely in Christ.

Encouragement and challenge

Resist the urge to shrink God to a size you can manage. Let His self-revelation in Scripture and in Christ shape what you believe about Him.
