Jacob’s Ladder

← All sermons

Summary

Beginning from Isaiah’s declaration that God’s purpose stands and he will accomplish all his good pleasure, the series traces that sovereign purpose through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Esau, born first, despised his birthright for a single meal and was later rejected when he sought the blessing with tears, proof that the promise runs not through the flesh but through God’s electing call, so that it is “the children of the promise” who are reckoned as descendants. Isaac’s blessing, secured through Jacob rather than Esau, and Jacob’s departure toward Laban set the stage for the ladder itself.

At Bethel, Jacob dreamed of a ladder set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven, the angels of God ascending and descending on it, and the LORD standing above it renewing to Jacob the promise given to Abraham and Isaac. Jacob woke in awe, set up a memorial pillar, and vowed himself to the LORD. The message connects that ladder to Christ himself, the true meeting place between heaven and earth, and to the living hope believers now have through his resurrection, an inheritance kept in heaven for a salvation ready to be revealed.

Essential truths

  1. God's purpose stands, and he accomplishes all his good pleasure regardless of human striving.
  2. God's promise runs through his electing call, not through birth order or human effort; Esau's birthright and blessing were forfeited, while Jacob became the child of promise.
  3. Jacob's ladder pictures the true meeting place between heaven and earth that is fulfilled in Christ.
  4. Believers have been born again to a living hope through Christ's resurrection, to an inheritance kept in heaven for them.

Encouragement and challenge

Rest in the same God whose purpose cannot be stopped: don't grasp for blessing the way Esau or Jacob's schemes did, but trust the God who meets you in Christ, the true ladder between heaven and earth, and who is keeping your inheritance safe.
