Jacob’s Prosperity

← All sermons

Summary

The sermon follows Jacob’s years working for his uncle Laban, who changed his wages again and again, yet watches Jacob’s flocks grow “exceedingly” in spite of it. Read alongside God’s earlier promise to Abraham – to bless his descendants and bring them back to their own land – Jacob’s story becomes a case study in God’s providence working through and even despite unjust circumstances.

Laban’s shifting accusations and broken promises stand in contrast to God’s faithfulness, who appears to Laban in a dream and warns him to deal carefully with Jacob. The sermon draws out that God’s people can trust His providence even under unfair treatment, because it is God, not the schemes of others, who ultimately determines their prosperity.

Essential truths

  1. Jacob's prosperity under Laban's unfair treatment shows that God's providence, not human scheming, truly prospers His people.
  2. God can turn even the deceit and injustice of others into means of blessing for those who trust Him.
  3. God kept His promise to Abraham's family to be with Jacob and bring him back to his own land.
  4. True prosperity is the fruit of God's faithfulness, not a reward for cleverness or self-reliance.

Encouragement and challenge

When you are treated unfairly, trust God's providence rather than resorting to scheming of your own, and look for His hand at work even in difficult circumstances.
