The Aaronic priesthood, with its qualifications, garments, and sacrifices, was never meant to be permanent; priests had to be chosen from among the people, set apart, and were themselves sinful, needing to offer sacrifices for their own sins as well as the people’s (Leviticus 21:10; Hebrews 5:1-4). Everything about that system, the tabernacle, the blood of goats and calves, foreshadowed something greater still to come.
Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, entering the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands through His own blood, securing eternal redemption once for all (Hebrews 9:11-12). Because believers now have this great High Priest who has passed through the heavens and can sympathize with their weaknesses, they are urged to hold fast their confession and draw near to the throne of grace with confidence, to receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:14-16).
