Law and Order

← All sermons

Summary

Beginning from the Shema — “Hear, O Israel, the LORD is our God, the LORD is one” — this message explores what law is for: to establish order, resolve disputes, and protect people within a family, a nation, or a person’s own life. God’s law, Scripture insists, is holy, righteous, and good.

Yet apart from Christ, human law and order collapse into confusion, because the human heart is deceitful and everyone tends to do what is right in their own eyes. The good news is that Law and Order Himself became flesh in Jesus Christ, and under the new covenant God does not merely hand down law from outside — He writes it on His people’s hearts, enabling them to work out their salvation as He works within them.

Essential truths

  1. Law establishes order, resolves disputes, and protects people within a family, community, or nation — and God's law is holy, righteous, and good.
  2. Apart from Christ, man's own attempts at law and order collapse into confusion, because every heart is deceitful and prone to do what is right in its own eyes.
  3. In Christ, Law and Order Himself became flesh — the eternal Word through whom all things were made.
  4. Under the new covenant, God does not merely give His law on tablets but writes it on His people's hearts by His Spirit.

Encouragement and challenge

Don't trust human law-keeping to produce true order in your heart — let God write His law within you through Christ, and work out your salvation with fear and trembling as He works in you.
