Seeing the Unseen God

← All sermons

Summary

How can anyone see a God who is unseen? The natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; they are foolishness to him, because they are spiritually appraised. The fool says in his heart there is no God, and the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. But to His disciples Jesus said, ‘Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear’ what prophets and righteous men longed to see.

God is seen by faith. The righteous live by faith, and we walk by faith, not by sight. Demanding proof is putting God to the test, as Israel did at Massah, asking, ‘Is the Lord among us or not?’ Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever comes to God must believe that He is and that He rewards those who seek Him. True worshipers worship in spirit and truth, and the lesson closes with the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham.

Essential truths

  1. The natural man cannot receive the things of God; they are spiritually discerned.
  2. God has openly revealed Himself to those whose eyes He has opened.
  3. The righteous walk by faith, not by sight, and must not put God to the test.
  4. Without faith it is impossible to please God.

Encouragement and challenge

Stop waiting for signs before you trust God. Take Him at His word, seek Him in faith, and worship Him in spirit and truth, as Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham did.
