Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, was Israel’s most solemn day – the one time each year the high priest entered the Most Holy Place with blood to make atonement for the sins of the whole nation, a picture of how seriously God treats sin and how costly its covering must be.
The sermon points from this shadow to its fulfillment in Christ, who does not need to repeat His sacrifice year after year but has, through His own blood, secured a full and final atonement, so that those who trust Him are ‘justified by faith’ and have peace with God (Rom. 5:1).
