The Incomprehensible God

← All sermons

Summary

The lesson opens with God’s name, “I AM WHO I AM”: He is the uncreated, self-existent and sovereign Lord, and all created being reveals Him, but nothing defines Him. It then asks how finite man, with limited understanding and a mind bound to the material world, can know the infinite God. Scripture answers that His understanding is unsearchable and His thoughts and ways are higher than ours. To grasp Him exhaustively would require a mind equal to God.

Yet God is not unknown. For a finite creature to know God, God must reveal Himself, and by faith we receive that revelation and know Him truly on a finite level. The study points to the testimony of Jesus, and to what God has revealed of Himself: God is spirit, God is light, and God cannot be contained in any house made by human hands.

Essential truths

  1. God is incomprehensible: no finite mind can know Him exhaustively.
  2. God can be known only because He reveals Himself.
  3. By faith we receive God's revelation and truly know Him on a finite level.
  4. God has revealed Himself as spirit and light, the Creator who cannot be contained.

Encouragement and challenge

Approach God with humility, not as a subject to master but as the Lord who has graciously made Himself known. Let what you cannot understand deepen your worship rather than your doubt.
