The Joy of Forgiveness

← All sermons

Summary

Psalm 32 begins with a blessing: how blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven and whose sin is covered. Paul quotes these words in Romans 4 to show that God credits righteousness apart from works. The lesson explains that forgiveness is not only release from sin and guilt but a declaration of blessing on a repentant sinner, who is now reconciled to God and brought into fellowship with the Triune God.

David also knew the torment of guilt. While he kept silent his body wasted away and God’s hand was heavy on him. When he acknowledged his sin and did not hide it, God forgave. The lesson ties this to imputation, our sins laid on Christ at the cross, and to the power of confession. God then promises to instruct and guide His forgiven people, and calls the upright to be glad and shout for joy.

Essential truths

  1. The forgiven sinner is blessed because God credits righteousness apart from works.
  2. Our sins were imputed to Christ, who bore them on the cross.
  3. Hiding sin brings misery; confessing it brings God's forgiveness.
  4. God instructs and guides the people He has forgiven.

Encouragement and challenge

Do not keep silent about sin you have been hiding. Confess it to the Lord, receive His forgiveness in Christ, and let His instruction guide you.
