The Lord Is My Portion

← All sermons

Summary

The study starts with the division of Canaan, where the tribe of Levi received no land because the Lord Himself was their inheritance. With the psalmists who cried, “You are my portion,” it teaches that to say this is to call God our ultimate inheritance and most valuable possession, in this life and the next. Whatever lot God has given us by His holy will is beautiful and meaningful, whether it looks good or bad to us, and we are called to be content in it.

That inheritance is everlasting, kept in heaven and secured in Christ, in whom we are chosen, adopted, redeemed and sealed by the Spirit. The slides recall the apostles and the faithful of Hebrews 11 who suffered without earthly reward, and the hymn “It Is Well with My Soul.” The lesson closes with grace sufficient in weakness and the call to wait silently for the Lord.

Essential truths

  1. The Lord Himself is the believer's inheritance and greatest treasure, above any earthly possession.
  2. The lot God assigns us in this life is good and meaningful, and we are called to be content in it.
  3. Our inheritance in Christ is imperishable, kept in heaven and sealed to us by the Holy Spirit.
  4. Because we belong to the Lord in life and in death, His grace is sufficient in every trial.

Encouragement and challenge

When what you have or have lost starts to define you, say with the psalmist, "The Lord is my portion," and wait quietly for Him with hope.
