The lesson opens with the world’s answers to the question of what matters most: health, family, happiness, and a list of good things such as work, friends and church. Then it asks, in Filipino, whether the welfare of your soul is among the things you value most. ‘What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?’ Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word from the mouth of God.
Jesus’ parable of the rich fool shows the darkened mind of a man who plans bigger barns and tells his soul to take its ease, only to hear God say, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you.’ So is the one who is not rich toward God. The study urges giving preference to the most important thing: work for the food that endures to eternal life, come and listen to God so your soul may live, and build on the rock by hearing and doing Christ’s words.
