The Parable of the Kingdom of God

← All sermons

Summary

The lesson defines the kingdom of heaven as the rule and reign of God advancing here on earth, bringing healing and restoration to the whole creation and reversing the effects of the curse. It is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The prophets foretold a Prince of Peace whose government would never stop increasing, a Lord who would be king over all the earth, and a throne founded on righteousness and justice.

Three parables show how the kingdom comes: the seed that grows while the farmer sleeps, the mustard seed that becomes the largest of garden plants, and the leaven that works through the whole batch. The kingdom is alive and moving, growing almost unnoticed, turning curses into blessing and bringing every sphere of life and thought under Christ, who is subduing His enemies. Isaiah’s picture of the righteous reign of the Branch of Jesse and the nations streaming to the Lord’s mountain gives hope. Small beginnings are not to be despised.

Essential truths

  1. The kingdom of God is His rule and reign advancing on earth, bringing restoration and reversing the effects of the curse.
  2. Like a seed and like leaven, the kingdom grows gradually and often unseen, but it grows surely.
  3. Christ reigns in righteousness and will bring every enemy under His feet.
  4. God watches over His word to perform it, so His people need not despise the day of small beginnings.

Encouragement and challenge

Do not measure the kingdom by how small your part in it looks today. Keep sowing faithfully in every area of life, trusting Christ to make it grow.
