The lesson starts from the Lord’s Prayer, “forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors,” and Peter’s question about how often to forgive. Jesus answers, “seventy times seven,” and tells of a king settling accounts. The slides show how massive a debt of ten thousand talents was, far beyond anything the servant could repay. He begged for patience, and the king had compassion and forgave the whole debt.
Yet that servant choked a fellow servant who owed him a little and threw him into prison. The king called him wicked, asked, “Should you not also have had mercy?” and handed him over to the torturers. Our sin debt was paid in full by Christ, the only basis for God’s forgiveness; we cannot repay it or earn salvation. Showing the same grace to others reflects God’s kindness, and we are to stand ready to forgive whoever repents.
