The Problem of Evil

← All sermons

Summary

Every honest person eventually asks why a good and all-powerful God allows evil, and this sermon works straight into that question rather than around it. It asks whether God is somehow the author of evil, and answers instead that evil is a real, present mystery in a world God rules, not an eternal force standing on equal footing with good.

Scripture insists that all have turned away and “none is righteous, no, not one” (Rom 3:10), which means the problem of evil begins inside the human heart, not merely outside it. God alone has the right to declare what is good and what is evil, and He does not owe fallen creatures an explanation for every evil they suffer. The only question worth asking, in the end, is not why evil exists, but whether we ourselves are right with the God who will one day judge it.

Essential truths

  1. Evil does not exist on equal terms with the good, as though it were an eternal counterpart to God's goodness.
  2. God alone has the authority to declare what is good and what is evil.
  3. God is not the author of evil, yet He remains sovereign over a world where evil is present.
  4. God's justice guarantees that evil will not go unanswered forever.

Encouragement and challenge

Trust God's goodness even when evil is present, and rest in His justice rather than demanding to understand every 'why.'
