The Self-Contained God

← All sermons

Summary

The God who reveals Himself in the Bible is absolute and unchanging, a Law-giver, and triune. Did God create man because He was lonely? No. God is ever self-contained, self-sufficient and self-satisfied, in need of nothing; even our devotion, service and praise add nothing to Him. He is the sovereign God who declares the end from the beginning and says, ‘My purpose will be established.’

The second part takes up the problem of the unbeliever: does God exist? The lesson answers that the knowledge of God is inescapable. Since God is man’s Creator, every part of man’s being, together with all creation, testifies about Him. The heavens declare His glory, and the psalmist confesses that the Lord has searched and known him, that there is nowhere to flee from His presence, and that he was fearfully and wonderfully made. Jesus warned that those who do not believe He is who He claims to be will die in their sins.

Essential truths

  1. God is self-contained and self-sufficient; He created out of His goodness, not out of need.
  2. The God of the Bible is absolute, unchanging, triune and sovereign over all His purposes.
  3. The knowledge of God is inescapable, because all creation and man himself testify of Him.
  4. To reject Christ's claims is to remain in one's sins.

Encouragement and challenge

Worship God as the One who needs nothing from you yet gives you everything. When you speak with unbelievers, remember that creation already testifies to them of God, and point them to Christ.
