The Throne

Summary

Revelation can feel strange and distant, but this message argues it is anything but irrelevant: in it, Jesus Christ reveals the true nature and direction of history from the standpoint of His throne, not from the chaos and turbulence of the world below.

Around that throne is a rainbow, recalling God’s covenant faithfulness even in judgment, and seven burning lamps and a sea of glass like crystal speak of the fullness of His Spirit and His holiness. The twenty-four elders surrounding the throne represent a redeemed people made into a kingdom of priests, destined to reign with God forever, a vision meant to anchor God’s people in confidence no matter how uncertain the present age feels.

Essential truths

  1. The book of Revelation reveals the nature and direction of history from the standpoint of God's throne, not from the chaos of the world.
  2. The rainbow around the throne recalls God's covenant faithfulness even in the midst of judgment.
  3. The redeemed are pictured as a kingdom of priests who will reign with God and serve Him forever.
  4. All creation and worship in heaven centers on the One seated on the throne, who is holy and worthy of all glory.

Encouragement and challenge

However uncertain or 'arcane' current events feel, fix your eyes on God's throne — history is not random, but moving toward His purposes.
