The Triune God: One God, One Lord

← All sermons

Summary

When Moses asked God’s name at the burning bush, God answered, “I AM WHO I AM” — the self-existent Creator, not definable by anything outside Himself, whose covenant name YHWH is His memorial to all generations. This message surveys the many names of God in Scripture (Elohim, El Shaddai, Jehovah-Jireh, and others) before settling on Israel’s central confession, the Shema: “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.”

That one Lord is revealed in Scripture as three persons: God the Father, in whom all things were created through and for the Son, and the Son given the name above every name, so every tongue will confess Jesus Christ is Lord. The sermon closes where the Shema itself does — commanding parents to teach these truths diligently to their children, at home and on the road, so the knowledge of the one true, triune God is passed to the next generation.

Essential truths

  1. God revealed Himself to Moses as "I AM WHO I AM," the self-existent One who is Creator, source, and definer of all things.
  2. The covenant name YHWH, given "to all generations," is God's personal, memorial name, distinct from His many descriptive titles.
  3. The Shema — "Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one" — establishes Israel's God as one Lord, revealed in Scripture as three persons.
  4. Because Christ has been given the name above every name, every knee will bow and every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
  5. The knowledge of God is meant to be taught diligently to children — at home, on the road, lying down and rising up.

Encouragement and challenge

Know the true, self-existent, triune God revealed in Scripture, and teach that knowledge diligently to the next generation.
