Who Is Jesus?

← All sermons

Summary

Many believed in Jesus when they saw His signs, John tells us, but Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew what was in man. After the feeding of the five thousand the crowds wanted to make Him king, yet He told them they sought Him for the loaves, and urged them to work for the food that endures to eternal life. Not everyone who says ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom, only the one who does the Father’s will.

The lesson lists how popular religions answer the question, from Jehovah’s Witnesses and Iglesia ni Cristo to Islam and Buddhism, and sets beside them John the Baptist’s question, ‘Are You the Expected One?’ Jesus pointed to His works. At Caesarea Philippi Peter confessed, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,’ a truth revealed by the Father. The study closes with the Christ of Scripture: exalted above every name, head over all things, the promised Messiah and coming Judge.

Essential truths

  1. Following Jesus for His signs or His gifts is not the same as knowing who He is.
  2. Calling Jesus 'Lord' must show itself in doing the will of the Father.
  3. The confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, is revealed by the Father.
  4. God has exalted Jesus above every name, and every knee will bow to Him.

Encouragement and challenge

Ask yourself honestly why you follow Jesus. Hear His words and do them, building your life on the rock rather than on the sand.
