You Shall Have No Other Gods

← All sermons

Summary

The first of the Ten Commandments could not be plainer: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” This two-part message calls for undivided loyalty and devotion to the Lord alone, trusting that he does all things well rather than dividing our hearts between God and rival gods.

Because “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” the sermon presses worshippers to examine what competes for first place in their affections and to return to trusting God’s providence over every area of life. True worship of the one God begins with recognizing him as sovereign ruler over all things and refusing any substitute.

Essential truths

  1. The first commandment forbids every rival god and calls for undivided loyalty and devotion to the Lord alone.
  2. Wherever a person's treasure is, there his heart will be also.
  3. God's providence rules all things, so his people can trust him rather than any idol.
  4. Loving anything more than God turns that thing into an idol.

Encouragement and challenge

Examine what competes for first place in your heart, and return your undivided trust and worship to God alone.
